There are many arguments for free university education. The most important one is that each person should be given an opportunity to gain the education they want, no matter what their parents material status is. The main argument against is that in most countries, it is virtually impossible to cover the expenses from the state budget. Even in a traditional welfare state like Germany, there is a public discussion about abandoning the idea, mainly because of enormous budget expenditures it requires and economic difficulties it has caused lately.
On the other hand, in countries like the United States, although education at lots public and private universities is paid, with a fee of about 20000 US dollars or even more, thanks to a great system of scholarships, granted by colleges themselves, state governments or various private organisations, virtually no high-school student, who would normally go to college loses the chance because they have no money to cover the expenses . In my opinion the biggest advantage of this system is that it really works and has worked for years, with about 30 percent of adult Americans being college graduates, which ranks them among the worlds best, just behind Japan and the UK> I also think that it is no tragedy if someone has to do a part-time job to pay the fee. To sum up, I do think that everyone should have a chance to study, but I am not really sure if every tax-payer should be obliged to pay for that.
